Culver City is located in the westside of the Los Angeles county and was named after its founder, Harry Culver. The city was incorporated on September 20th 1917 and just recently celebrated its centennial anniversary with an enormous array of yearlong festivities.
From its original 1.2 squares miles in Main Street, the city has since annexed more than 40 pieces of land, and now stretches for about five square miles.
Culver City is mostly surrounded by the city of Los Angeles and the two cities share a lot of sociocultural elements and historic significance with one another, namely the arts of Hollywood filmmaking and TV production.
Ever since the decade of the roaring twenties in America, Culver City has been one of the most important centers for movie and television production. The city is the home of the Metro Goldwyn Mayer studios. Fittingly, Culver City’s motto is “the heart of screenland”.
The founder Harry Culver first attempted to establish the city in 1913, but would only come to be successful in 1917. The first film studio in Culver City was built soon after the incorporation by Thomas Ince in 1918.
Culver City has a rich cultural, lifestyle and business landscape where companies, the arts and education flourish.
