Culver City City Hall
September 9, 2017 from 5-8PM
The final performance in the 1988 series will be on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at Culver City City Hall.
The Hanging Garden, Quotation Courtyard & Panoramic and La Ballona dance performance take place in September, concluding the 1988 series the same month and year of Culver City’s Centennial. This performance piece is rooted in the history of Culver City and highlights Hanging Garden by Ed Carpenter, Quotation Courtyard, and Panoramic by Barbara McCarren and La Ballona by May Sun, installed in 1995. The performance begins with the public seated in City Hall courtyard facing Hanging Garden. Five HDDT company dancers will perform on the second and third balconies of the City Hall atrium where Hanging Garden is sited. Live Chamber music will accompany the performance as a classical response to both the architecture and history of Culver City. In the second act, the audience will walk over to the side courtyard, known as Heritage Park, where a replica of the old City Hall facade is located. The performance continues in the formal pools where La Ballona is sited and next to where Quotation Courtyard and Panoramicreside. The dancers’ movement will beckon the audience to a new landscape, engaging them in intimate dialogues about May Sun’s artwork and our human origins.
Hanging Garden by Ed Carpenter is an abstract representation of a hanging garden, using hand blown leaded glass and serves as a wind barrier and light filter bridging the connection between the upper floors of City Hall. Quotation Courtyard and Panoramic by Barbara McCarren fuse Culver City’s past with its present, using bricks from the former City Hall and quotes from historical and Civil Rights leaders. An additional component of this piece is a movie camera that displays black and white images of Culver City and references Culver City’s film history. La Ballona by May Sun is a commemorative piece highlighting the history and importance of Ballona Creek and the indigenous people of the area.
1988 features four site-specific dance performances by Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre, centering on six featured artworks from Culver City’s public art collection. The 1988 event series celebrates the 1988 adoption of the Art in Public Places Program Ordinance and will highlight the public art and performing arts grant program as primary components of the ordinance. Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre joins 1988 Producer and former Culver City Cultural Affairs Commissioner, Marla Koosed, who worked closely on the most recent ordinance update. Together they toast Culver City’s Centennial and present 1988 with performances throughout 2017.
